Bank Holiday Today

Bank Holiday Today: Banks Closed in Several Cities for Diwali, Govardhan Pooja

Is Today Bank Holiday?

Many bank customers are asking, “is today bank holiday?” The answer depends on your location. Banks across several Indian states are closed today, Tuesday, October 21, 2025, to observe Diwali Amavasya, Deepawali, and Govardhan Pooja, as per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday calendar.

Why Are Banks Closed?

The celebrations for Diwali, a prominent Hindu festival, are based on the Amavasya Tithi. This year, the Tithi spans two days—October 20 and October 21. While most of the country celebrated Diwali on Monday, some regions are observing the festival today.

Additionally, some states are celebrating Govardhan Pooja today, a festival that traditionally follows Diwali, leading to the bank holiday.

According to the RBI’s official list, banks are scheduled to remain closed today in the following cities:

  • Belapur
  • Bhopal
  • Gangtok
  • Guwahati
  • Imphal
  • Jammu
  • Mumbai
  • Nagpur
  • Raipur

Are Banking Services Available?

While physical bank branches in the locations above are closed, customers can still access most banking services. Online banking, mobile banking apps, and ATM services are expected to remain operational for all convenient financial transactions.
